Breathing New Life Into a Legend: 2006 Kona Stinky Restomod.

Some bikes don’t just fade into history — they earn legendary status.

If you rode, raced, or even just followed downhill mountain biking in the mid-2000s, chances are the Kona Stinky needs no introduction. This bike was everywhere. Park laps, shuttle days, backyard builds, World Cup pits — the Stinky became synonymous with aggressive riding and bombproof reliability.

And now, 20 years later, I’m bringing one back.

Welcome to the start of a multi-month build project where we take a 2006 Kona Stinky Downhill Mountain Bike and modernise it from the ground up — blending classic DH DNA with today’s technology to breathe new life into an absolute icon.

Why the Stinky?

Because some frames deserve a second chapter.

The goal here isn’t restoration for the sake of originality. This isn’t a museum piece. This build is about evolution — taking a proven downhill platform and upgrading it with modern components, geometry considerations, drivetrain tech, braking performance, suspension tuning, and finishing touches that simply didn’t exist back in 2006 such as:

  • Modern suspension performance
  • Contemporary cockpit setup
  • Updated braking systems
  • Current drivetrain standards
  • Fresh wheels and rubber
  • Clean aesthetics
  • Rideability that matches today’s expectations

All while respecting what made the Stinky special in the first place.

This is about showing what’s possible when old-school meets new-school.

The Build Journey

Rather than dumping everything into one post, I’ll be documenting the build step-by-step over the coming months:

  • Initial teardown and assessment
  • Frame prep and design direction
  • Component selection (and why)
  • Suspension setup
  • Wheel and tyre choices
  • Final assembly
  • Trail testing and real-world riding feedback

You’ll get the wins, the challenges, and the lessons learned along the way.

If you’re into bike builds, downhill heritage, or just love seeing classic machines reborn — this is for you.

Why Holeshot Cycles?

At Holeshot Cycles, we’re passionate about performance-driven bikes and components — whether that’s BMX race builds, downhill rigs, or anything in between. This project reflects what we do: combining experience, modern tech, and rider-first thinking to create bikes that genuinely perform.

Throughout this build, I’ll be using parts and products available through Holeshot Cycles suppliers wherever possible, and scouring the second-hand market for those rare, hard-to-find items. I’ll link everything along the way so you can follow the process or build something similar yourself.

Let’s Get Started

The Stinky is on the stand. Parts are being sourced. The plan is coming together.

This is the beginning of a full modern revival of a downhill legend — and I’m stoked to have you along for the ride.

Make sure to check back regularly, and if you’re not already following Holeshot Cycles, now’s a good time.

Let’s build something special.
